In this month’s edition of the Clarity Digest, we look into workforce health deterioration across the UK and why a new approach may be required.
We explore findings from the Health Foundation’s "Towards a healthier workforce" report, which delves into why the deteriorating workforce health issue demands attention, reviews the UK’s underlying work and health trends and offers insights into where government and business can focus to make the most difference right now.
Key Findings
The report highlights evidence supporting the need for a new approach to supporting the UK workforce health. For example, over 8 million people, or 20% of those aged 16 to 64 years, now have health conditions that restrict the type or amount of work they can do, up from 6 million in 2013. Similarly, there has been a rise in the number of people not participating in the labour market due to work-limiting conditions as well as an increase in the number of people receiving health related benefits.
The Digest summarises the report’s proposed new approach based on three dimensions: proactive initiatives to support worker health, early and effective support to keep people attached to the labour market, and improved financial incentives and employment and health support to help people back into work.
Addressing the deteriorating workforce health issues requires multi-dimensional measures. The Digest summarises recommendations made in the Health Foundation’s report which identifies areas for immediate action.
